    http://www.bangkokpost.com/auto/news/499735/mg3-answers-thai-demand-for-small-cars

SAIC Motor-CP Co, a joint venture of Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation and CP Group, yesterday introduced the MG3 hatchback, a new model to tap demand in the small-car segment. SAIC aims to sell 5,000 units of the Rayong-made car this year.

SAIC-CP is joining with five car rental companies to introduce the MG3 in their fleets.

The company also has plans to export the MG3 to right-hand-drive countries within Asean, starting with Malaysia next year.

    So with 9 months to go that's sales of 600 [3 only] a month they're targeting - up from 13 and 63!

More completely unrealistic targets set by SAIC. They still seem to be under the delusion that just because the cars wear an iconic brand people will buy the cars, but as is being proven in all the markets MG is in now in it continues to struggle. Until SAIC invest in their undoubted wealth into MG and realise that they have much to learn, the brand and SAICs ambitions of being a serious car maker will enter a terminal decline.

I doubt it is SAIC setting the targets in most markets, these super-ambitious targets are those of the JV.

SAIC *is* a serious top 15 world car maker and its sales and global presence are on the up. If the targets are missed, then what? Absolutely zero question of "terminal decline"(?).
The key is IMHO how fast expansion can happen and whether the supply chain is scalable.

SAIC are builders of other companies cars and financially have done extremely well out of it. I certainly wouldn't consider them to be one of the worlds top car companies any more than I would contract car producers like MAGNA or Valmet.

Sales in China over the last few months have shown a huge drop with MG6 and MG3 both in decline with neither model due for replacement in the next two years the decline of these models is terminal. Sales in the rest of the world are so small as to be insignificant. SAICS problems isnt the supply chain or how fast it can expand its designing desirable modern cars and selling them in large enough volumes to make the venture worth while. SAIC did make encouraging and fast progress in the first couple of years using old rover platforms and engines but now they have to come up with their own platforms and engines they have been rapidly over taken and unless the mindset changes they will never catch up.

Nope, "terminal" is not an analysis I can agree with, no way is that a serious judgment.
Nor can I see that the facilities in Anting, Pukou and Lingang bear any resemblance to the scale of those of VALMET in Uusikaupunki (have you ever been to Uusikaupunki?).
Now we have GT and GS in China, you might as well say that Ford's results are terminal because the Anglia 105E is not Euro 6 compliant.

The facilities may not compare with Valmet at least but the outcome is the same, they both make money building other peoples cars. So now GT and GS are available in China you are comparing the 6 and the 3 to an ancient obsolete car like the Anglia? The GT has hardly lit up the sales charts these last 2 months if you are relying on that to rescue the current dismal figures.

Dont forget SAIC are still trying to flog the 6 and the 3 over here. Both cars sales have been limited by the powertrains on offer from SAIC. It's a shame SAIC are unable to provide an engine for the UK spec MG6 that is euro 6 compliant (maybe they should buy one off Ford)

The sales of the 6 in Thailand seem to be a mirror image of the the UK operation with the car struggling to sell even in the high teens each month. I'm sure the 3 will bring a much needed improvement to these figures.

One quarter of total year sales in December, 86% of MG5 sales! How often have I seen managers *plan* for a "hockey stick curve" that sees them meeting their targets only in December...

Im so happy to see how they do all things - in one year they've got 4 models (3 new - 3, Xross, 5 GT), now waiting for a GS. I wonder how it will look like? Kuwait, Iran allready got chinese spec, Thailand should get euro spec, and i will not be surprised if they will get it before UK market... Smile They also got new front grills for all models (with chrome line), UK has only on MY2016 MG3.

So more models, MG6 in sedan, hatchback versions and bigger wheels, aerokit and DVD-SATNAV for MG3, new front ends, new engines (1.4TGI 110kw in MG5 GT), Inkanet software - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihE3V6e4mpg

Everything better than UK... If UK will get rid of MG6, they should sell MG5 GT instead of it, it really looks very nice.

MG Thailand on 23 of March at Impact Motor Show will introduce MG GS, MG UK only on 5th of May at London Motor Show. Is it possible that Thailand will get Euro spec model sooner than UK? Or Thailand will get chinese spec model?

Thank you Mirtininkas, all very interesting.

I understand that the assembly plant in Thailand builds the cars from imported finished, trimmed and painted bodyshells and then fits the engine, transmission and front components plus suspension etc. locally, in a similar system to that used in Longbridge.

Now they have introduced the GS in Thailand do you know if they are assembling it in the same way as the 3 and 6? There has been some debate on other sites recently about the level of local assembly that the GS will have in the UK and I suspect it will be similar to Thailand but would be interested to know..

    MG GS - 52
    MG6 - 39

MG3 and MG6 sales proportions are similar to UK, but i wonder why they sell so few GS?
