MG to expand network and range: "20,000 annual sales by 2021"

Post by patpending on Wed Jun 15, 2016 12:40 pm

MG Motor UK plans to expand its dealer network by over 30 sites by the end of 2017 as the carmaker moves to quadruple its sales within the next five years.
The brand expects sales of its newly launched GS (pictured), its first compact SUV, to help it hit a record 5,000 registrations by the end of 2016, a 58.6% increase on last year’s total of 3,152 units.
The brand currently has 78 dealers and in the year to date has been steadily recruiting more to fill open points across the country.
“We currently have 78 dealers, 15 more than last year, and plan to have 90 by the end of 2016 and between 100-110 by the end of next year; although recruitment is increasingly difficult with big groups snapping up smaller ones,” said Matthew Cheyne, head of sales and marketing.
“Our goal is to re-establish this franchise. In five years’ time we want to be at 20,000 vehicles; that’s where we want to be in the short term but we’re not about stacking cars on dealer forecourts.”
MG’s growth will come from new models which will see dealers selling two new SUVs by the end of 2017. First up is the GS which went on sale this week and is aggressively priced from £14,995. MG anticipates 700-800 GS sales this year, rising to 1,000 in 2017.
Its next new model will be a B-segment SUV which the brand expects will become its biggest seller. An all-new MG3 replacement is also scheduled and the C/D-segment MG6 will be discontinued in September with no plans for a direct replacement.

Do I sense a bit of exaggeration from our nice Mr Cheyne or was he just over excited by all the attention of the GS launch?!

Only a few months ago his declared sales target was '10,000 annually by 2020', now that has nearly doubled to 20,000 by mid 2021..

Brilliant if they can do it and I for one am looking forward to the next SUV in 2017 as a potential replacement for my '3.

First time too that I have seen actual 'official' confirmation that the '6 will be discontinued in September. If that's happening and they are targeting 5,000 sales this year including only 800 GS models. then they are gonna have to shift a lot of '3's in the next few months as sales actually fell in March and April compared to last year..

Now everyone knows that the 6 is being discontinued from September who in their right mind would buy one now? Just wait till September and get a 16 plate pre registered car for peanuts if someone really wants one. It's also quite suprising MG announced this piece of negative news at the launch of a new car.

Perhaps they are burying bad news amongst all the good news stories on the GS ? There is an article about it in Autocar online too..

Yes that was probably the intention although I don't think it has worked as they would have wished. Now MG have also admitted that GS will not be assembled at Longbridge where does that leave the people who work in manufacturing? Is there more bad news to come?

The quote I saw was that UK assembly of the GS may be introduced in future depending on the demand and hence future volumes (making local UK assembly more cost effective) - especially if they introduce it to mainland Europe markets.

The '3 is still assembled at Longbridge (recent evidence on another website) and because of it's small size and the larger volumes involved (compared to the '6 and GS) I understand that the system of importing finished bodies in containers (from China or Thailand) and the engines and gearboxes separately (from another plant in China than the bodies) for final assembly at Longbridge, is viable and works well. As with the GS, volumes will increase again if they enter mainland Europe and the UK assembly will also then help with import tarrifs (although that may of course change following June 23).

So no more 'bad news' I hope..

I believe they have just completed a batch if 500 MG3 at Longbridge and the cars for the rest of the year will be imported fully built to Bristol docks (They no longer use Southampton). From what I have been told the company is now using a contractor to process cars there and it is marginalizing the operation at Longbridge.

Hopefully SAIC will keep faith with Longbridge assembly and produce the small suv and the MG3 facelift there. If not and MG start making British workers redundant while draping the flag over their products any lingering support I have for them will sadly disappear.

I note that 70 GSs have been registered in the first month.

Just over 70 GS registered say MG. So one demo for each dealer and no more than 9 sold then.

and with around 70 dealers, no room for others like the one Summit sold!

Yes, the Sales Centre have "sold" double figures but the first customer "registration" they made was to Adam Sloman, I think yesterday. Cambridge have sold at least three. Looks like the full effect in registrations won't be seen till September, though 60-70 a month won't set the house on fire...

Matthew Cheyne is quoted as going for a 60% increase in annual sales to 5,000 for 2016. Misprint? EDIT seems high though it's the figure in the OP from June. It would need average monthly sales for the final five months of 560 (up 78% on the average for the first seven, 15% up on 2015) and we know only some 60(?) GS per month are planned...

MG Motor recently achieved record growth in July and are determined to reach 5,000 sales by the end of the year.
