    MG6 Saloon Revealed

MG Motor has revealed the saloon version of its new MG6 at Longbridge.

Sales of the new four-door Focus rival will start in the UK in July, three months after the first deliveries of the new five-door hatchback. Prices for the saloon model are likely to be between £17,000 and £20,000.

The MG6 had originally been expected to be launched last autumn, but it has been delayed due to customer feedback on some of the interior switchgear and trim materials. Changes have been made as a result of these clinics which has led to a delayed launch.

Chinese parent firm SAIC was also keen for press drives of the car to occur in Britain and not Spain as originally planned, with these now scheduled for March.

Part-designed in the UK, the MG6 will be powered by a 147bhp 1.8 turbo and is said to be capable of 120mph and 0-62mph in around nine seconds. The engine is a third-generation version of Rover’s K-series, now re-named N-series, re-engineered with better cooling, lubrication and head gasket.

Both saloon and hatchback MG6 variants will be assembled at Longbridge and MG Motor's parent firm SAIC is currently shipping knockdown kits to the UK for assembly. A total of 40 people are currently employed on MG's production line meaning capacity is currently around 5000 units per year.

But the car will only be available in the UK, not the rest of Europe, until at least summer 2012, as it will not launch it in mainland Europe without a diesel engine. This is currently scheduled to arrive in the MG6 in summer 2012.

Prices for the five-door MG6 are likely to start at around £16,500. Three trim levels will be offered for both saloon and hatch, with the price gap between the entry level models at around £500 and the top-spec models £1000. This is because MG's market research revealed saloon car buyers expected more equipment than hatchback buyers. Sat-nav will be standard on mid-range and top-spec models.

MG has also revealed a new logo, which is seen on the screen behind the MG6 saloon in these pictures.

UK: MG's second model launch brought forward

The famous MG marque will take to UK roads this summer with two British-assembled cars and a new logo.

The Chinese-owned company has brought forward the launch of the MG6 sports saloon to July, two months after the Ford Focus size hatchback model reaches showrooms.

Sales and marketing chief Guy Jones said: "We received really good feedback from our market research on the saloon which is perceived as a prestigious sports model. There is a very high level of interest in the car so we have brought forward the launch by a few months."

UK four door prices will be GBP17-20,000 and it will be assembled with its five door sibling at what's left of the old MG Rover plant at Longbridge, where, Jones said, Chinese owner SAIC has spent GBP45m ahead of the MG relaunch.

First there is an image to rebuild. Jones said: "We can do this, we have seen other iconic British brands resurrected over the past few years and the same will be done with MG."

The company has employed film director Ridley Scott's production company to make a new film from which a TV ad will be spun off.

Dealers will also be kitted out with the company's new signage, the famous hexagonal MG badge set on a new red background.

    Nice new logo...

...but what a shame the MG6 brochure still contains the old logo. £1m should have been enough to change that too.

I think the indicator repeaters should have been kept on the side and not in the wing mirrors, because that black plastic looks unsightly Sad

admittedly activity at Longbridge is arising from the ashes - but the Phoenix is not a good symbol for a successful MG! lol

I don't speak about "Phoenix four" : don't forget that the chinese Phoenix (Fenghuang) is very positive, like the Yang (lol)

The Phoenix is also a car brand, owned by SAIC.

    SAIC's original Phoenix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-qap2XNhFE

And the more modern 2008 Fengyi (Phoenix) concept car:

it really brings it home to you after exactly six years that new cars are going to be leaving Longbridge with brand new handbooks!

(mind you if they give directions on how to leave "the long bridge" they probably are autotranslated...)

well, I see the news has been on the site for over a month, but I somehow didn't believe it until MGE reported it:

In the April edition of MG Enthusiast, we read that MG Motor told journos that the MG6 saloon will be at press events in June and on sale in July. Higher spec than hatchback, priced £17k- £20k, still no diesel.

Sales target: 2,000 in 12 months. The factory in its current state could handle 5,000 vehicles [hatch and saloon?] - with extra shifts etc it could handle 40,000. Ultimate capacity: 100,000.

You wait for a new MG five-seater for years and two come along at once! Laughing
