I am indebted to French spies for this story and the above photoshop:

New MG Roadster will be based on the Icon concept, with classic MGB touches - and our exclusive images show how it could look

MG hopes to appeal to a new generation of enthusiasts with this modern-day interpretation of legendary sports cars like the MGB.

The car is likely to go on sale in 2015, starting at around £14,000.

Other interviews in the press have said that there is no priority to make a new sportscar, but that a new sportscar will be a modern interpretation.

It's true that Jukes seem pretty popular and the new Evoque is evidently doing well. These cars are the new sportscars!

I think it will look quite different to that image and much more stylish!

    Or maybe not?

“We want to create something that's seen as the next breed of sports car," Lindley told us.

He reassured us that it doesn't have to mean we're getting a production version of this year's Icon concept - a small SUV coupe wearing the face of an MGB. That's no-one's idea here of a sports car, but it's hard to imagine how they're going to reinvent the classic two-seat, rear-drive roadster set-up.

“The traditional sports car industry is shrinking and shrinking," said Lindley. He also pointed out that China doesn't buy sports cars, a problem when right now the majority of MG sales are over there, although it has big plans for European expansion.
