China’s favorite woman: Margaret Thatcher dies

Former British PM Margaret Thatcher dies

Thatcherism is probably having more effect on MG today than when she was in office!

Chinese reconstruction of the important meeting between Deng Xiaoping and Margaret Thatcher in Beijing on 24 September 1984 with talks about the future of Hong Kong.

Of the “60 Most-Influential Foreigners Shaping the Last 60 Years of Chinese Development“, the China Global Times decided that Margaret Thatcher was the only woman who made the cut. 70 percent of the finalists were selected by readers, while 30 percent were recommended by “academics”.

"Seeing for one's self is a hundred times better than hearing from others." - Margaret Thatcher on signing the document for the return of Hong Kong to China at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing (same place that the NAC - SAIC cooperation document was signed).

I know a lot of people out there disliked Mrs Thatcher intensely, but you knew where you were with her, unlike so many modern politicians.

    And admired in China!

Mr Gorbachev,” said Margaret Thatcher, “can we be absolutely frank with each other?” He replied through the interpreters that yes, indeed they could. “Good,” she cried, “because I want you to know that I hate Communism.”

Her directness horrified some of her aides, but it had a very different effect on the Soviet leader. Recalling the encounter years later, Sir Bernard Ingham, her press secretary, said simply: “Gorbachev fell in love with her on the spot.”
