How come you're there? Are you press?

I expect they will be unveiling the interior spec and the journos will have a good poke about with the dreaded plastics. To be honest, if they aren't furnished with the silkiest, most luxurious textiles, fabrics and plastics, then they may be in trouble. Certainly, if the dash etc is made of the same stuff as the MG6's worst bits, they'll be crucified - and justly. It isn't like they've not had any warning or time to prepare....

Don't know about "justly". We all know how a Spanish-made Polo "exudes German build quality" whereas a Wolfsburg-made SEAT displayed the lackadaisical touch of the sombrero wearer. With Clarkson, we saw an example of how his team had already largely written the review before he even stalled it. This may explain why the same (?) speedos light up different colours on Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda, so the reviewer remembers how good he is supposed to find them. Wink

I find the dash on the MG6 quite nice - and have had the comment "yeah, but you wanted to like it". The idea that you can find something OK or not irrespective of brand or fashion seems to be an odd one nowadays.

You are quite right - it's all about lazy perceptions - BUT the perceptions are already made and already against them. Plus even enthusiasts have had a few negative comments to make about the 6's interior. If they produce an MG3 with a serviceable 'industry standard' interior in levels of quality, they will be knocked. That might be unfair, but they have to work hard now; they might have their hearts in the right place, but they aren't coming across as a professional operation - nor as a viable option to car buyers.

They need to up their game and exceed expectations to try and counter some of the negative press they get.

MG certainly can't afford to ignore how they are seen. The assembled journos might be quite negative. I suppose there is a risk that trim MG have tried their best to get right will not please the papes. Sad

I don't think that all of the journos will have negative preconceptions, a few will but on the whole most press I have seen regarding the new MGs has been fairly positive.

yes, I think Andrew English (Telegraph) and Ken Gibson (Sun) are very fair, as well as Quentin Willson (though he has also done some work for MG).

There have also been very positive articles in Autocar and even Auto Express. Didn't Steve Cropley write a positive one once?

On the other side is the Daily Mail's James Martin (here's his sloppy piece) http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-2014726/MG6-It-start-new-era--end-love-affair-says-JAMES-MARTIN.html and Clarkson, except he'll not be there, I expect.

NB - I have taken these posts focusing on June and MG3 out of the May MG6 Sales thread which naturally kicked the discussion off:

Most journalists find something negative, that is their job but it's hard to find a genuinely negative review about the MG6, most are very positive and the few that are somewhat negative were written before the UK MG6 was released.

The only person who has been totally negative is Clarkson and he is not press, he is an entertainer, when he says something you should not take it literally any more than you take a comedian literally. He said the UK MG6 is Chinese, but the number of Chinese people involved in pressing the body parts for last months UK sales was 0.08!

This is my beef with Top Gear - it continually wins awards for FACTUAL television. It's a symptom of timid schedulers; they don't like to broadcast factual programmes as they turn thick viewers off, so everything had to be dressed up as fun and interactive and matey. Countryfile is another programme that's ruined like that. Sports reporting has to have the reporter try and join in etc. And then you have the result that lines are blurred and journalists become 'entertainers', tempted to say things for effect.

Sorry, took the new thread straight off topic...

Anyway, browsing forums, there seem to be a lot of people going today and they can't all be journalists. How did people get an invite? I'd have liked one...

Thanks to Arnaud for this tip:

    http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-mg-3-will-cost-less-%C2%A310000

The MG 3 is set to cost less than £10,000 and will be offered with “hundreds” of different styling and customisation options. The MG 3, showcased in the UK for the first time at an event at MG’s Longbridge plant in Birmingham today, will go on sale in the UK this autumn.

The European version of the MG 3 was first seen at the Shanghai motor show in April, complete with a more distinctive exterior and plusher interior than the car of the same name on sale in China.

It has been designed and engineered in the UK. Final assembly is taking place in the UK, with knocked-down kits being shipped to Longbridge from China.

The MG 3 is an important part of the brand’s rebirth in the UK. Sales of the MG 6 haven’t impressed, but a style-led supermini pitched into a growing segment should lift sales volumes.

The customisation packages will give owners “hundreds and hundreds” of different ways to spec their cars, according to a source. They’ll include myriad options for the exterior styling, interior trim and wheel designs.

MG is pitching the car at the likes of the Mini and Vauxhall Adam, but with prices set to start at less than £10,000, it could be marketed as offering the style of those rivals with the space of a car from the class above. The MG 3 is Ford Fiesta sized and a five-door only.

The MG 3 will be offered with a 104bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to a five-speed manual as its sole initial powertrain choice. Exact pricing will be announced closer to its autumn on-sale date.

Well, that's interesting, but the marketing will have to step up a gear before it's seen as a MINI rival as opposed to a Fiesta or Picanto  rival etc. They need the image to with the car.

    Autocar shows the interior.

    I note:

    • Nice big dials (unlike MG6)
    • Proper handbrake next to driver
    • Room for stuffed toy on dash.

    Thumbs up.

Autocar have uploaded a lot of pics, including the 'collection' - presumably these won't be the £9995 cars, so does anyone know the breadth of prices in China? What the base model lacks compared to the top end ones?

    http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-mg-3-will-cost-less-%C2%A310000-latest-pics?page=1

It's trying to second-guess them of course, but with only one engine available the price variations must be down to trim and equipment. One of the main selling points of the MG6 is the high level of standard equipment in it, so presumably the MG3 is the same?

Mine do - a major shortcoming of the Mk2 dash.

    Trim levels:

    http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/shanghai-auto-show/mg3-european-specification-revealed-shanghai-motor-show-2013

The European version of the MG3 supermini that will go on sale in the UK this summer has been revealed at the Shanghai motor show.
The MG3 is a more heavily stylised than the Chinese version of the car, drawing more extensively on the looks of the critically acclaimed MG Zero concept on which it is based.
"It was important to us that the design shone through," said MG UK sales and marketing boss Guy Jones. "We plan to fight for sales with the likes if the Vauxhall Adam, Citroen DS3 and Mini." As a result of this, buyers will be offered "substantial" interior and exterior customisation options.
Jones declined to give an indication of price for the car, saying it was still being set, but insiders suggest it will start from around £10,000 and rise to £16,000.
It will be sold as a five door, and only with the firm's 104bhp, four cylinder petrol engine and five-speed manual initially. There will be three trim levels: TS1, TS2 and TS3.
"The share of sales for diesels of autos is small, so we see no rush to go there," said Jones, who confirmed the higher two trim levels wil be generously equipped compared to its rivals, as with the MG6.

I think the UK version is so different that the Chinese prices are irrelevant, for a start the base model has a 1.3L engine and most come with an automated manual transmission which the UK would hate even though it is quite a sensible option!
